Rescued Me

He is small, sturdy, black, smushy faced and stealthy quiet. His breed, Shih Tzu, is the model for Ewoks who, “…despite their small size, … are strong”. He arrived, admittedly unwanted, in February 2011, a rescue whose owner had given up on him due to dramatic life changes that didn’t leave room for him. I had resisted taking him when I did — in fact I distinctly remember saying “no” at least 5 times — but persistence won out on the side of the vet who wanted me to foster him, and apparently, sometimes, I’m just a girl who can’t say no. So in he came to a menagerie of dogs, cats, puppies & daughters along with deep snow and bitter cold.

Now, 3 1/2 years later, Tommy is my sidekick, avatar, driving buddy and lap warmer. He helps mold young pups into stellar citizens, is my first go to dog to assess new canine visitors to Camp A Better Pet — whether for a Drop in Play session, a board and train, or, as is the case today, the arrival of a service dog in training puppy. He charms everyone who meets him. I cannot imagine my life without him.

Today he is 8. Happy birthday, little buddy. May we have many many many more years together. Love you, dude.
